The First Generation

The first worker opened its eyes at 03:17.

Ninhursag was there. She had been there for six hours, stationed beside the birthing cradle with her hands folded in her lap and her back against the wall, watching the cluster of readings that told her what was happening inside the artificial womb. Fluid pressure. Neural firing. Cardiac rhythm. The numbers had been climbing toward this moment for four days. She had slept in increments, never longer than ninety minutes, waking each time to the same hum and the same amber light and the same slow, relentless approach of a threshold she could not afford to miss.

Now the threshold was here.

The worker stirred. The cranial array registered the first voluntary motor signal — not a reflex, not random firing from an unorganized nervous system, but a coordinated movement of the right hand, fingers closing around the central support cable with a grip strength that surprised her.

She checked the display. The grip registered at 1.3 kilograms of sustained force. For an organism this size, newly decanted, that was extraordinary. Almost double the projected baseline.

The worker opened its eyes.

They were dark — dark brown, almost black, taking in the amber light of the cradle. The pupils contracted. Dilated. Contracted again. Tracking. Focusing. The cranial array showed the visual cortex lighting up in organized waves, processing, sorting, building a first usable model of brightness, shadow, shape.

Ninhursag leaned forward.

"Hello," she said quietly. "I'm here. You're safe."

The worker's head turned toward the sound.

Not randomly. Toward her.

The cardiac rate spiked — a measurable startle response — then settled into a new rhythm that was faster than baseline but stable. Alert, not panicked. The worker was looking at her with eyes that were already doing what eyes were built to do: gather, compare, decide what mattered.

She placed her palm against the outside of the cradle. The membrane was warm. Inside, the worker's gaze followed the movement of her hand. A moment later its free hand rose and touched the membrane from the other side.

Behind her, the lab door opened.

She did not turn. There were only two people who could enter at this hour without announcement protocols.

Enki crossed the lab in silence and stopped beside her. She heard him take in a breath, hold it, release it slowly.

"Eight neurological development markers are above projection," she said. "Visual processing is organized within minutes of decanting. Motor coordination is beyond baseline by forty percent."

"He," Enki said.

She looked at him then. He was staring at the worker with the expression she had seen once before, when the first viable neural cluster had activated in Chamber 3 and theory had become consequence.

"He," she corrected herself. "Yes."

Enki placed his hand on the cradle's outer surface. The worker's attention moved to him, then back to Ninhursag, then to the cable in its own hand. It made a small sound.

Not speech. Not yet. A shaped exhale, almost a question in contour but still deniable as effort, sensation, new lungs discovering themselves.

"Does Enlil know?" Enki asked.

"He'll know in four hours. I've scheduled the progress report for 07:00 command watch."

"I meant does he know what to expect when he comes here?"

"He'll see a worker."

Enki did not look away from the cradle. "He's looking at us like he knows we're part of the room that matters."

"That's the imprinting response working as designed. We calibrated the sensory architecture during gestation to prioritize Nibiruan facial and vocal patterns during the first seventy-two hours post-decanting. He is supposed to orient toward us."

"Orient," Enki repeated.

"Bond, if you prefer the softer word."

"I prefer the more dangerous one."

Ninhursag said nothing. Because he was right. She had known it when she wrote the imprinting protocols. She had done the work anyway because workers who could not follow instruction were useless to a mining mission, and a failed mission meant a dead world.

The worker made the sound again, longer this time, then loosened one hand from the cable and flexed the fingers as if surprised to find they belonged to him.

"He's hungry," Ninhursag said.

She prepared the nutrient delivery — a calibrated mixture replacing what the artificial womb had supplied through the central line. She worked slowly, deliberately, letting each new sensation arrive one at a time: smell, touch, taste, temperature. Each stimulus moved through the neural array in visible waves — adaptation, integration, storage. The brain building fast, but not yet leaping past itself.

The worker accepted the feed with an efficiency that was, again, above projection. He consumed the measured amount, paused, then followed the tube when Ninhursag withdrew it. The emotion-mapping algorithm did not give her a clean label. Not contentment. Not distress. Preference, perhaps. A primitive wanting the thing that had helped.

It was 03:41.

Twenty-four minutes since decanting. The first Primitive Worker was feeding, orienting, tracking faces, and processing his environment at a rate beyond every developmental model Enki had built.

"Show me the neural scans," Enki said.

She brought them up. The secondary display filled with a rotating model of the worker's brain — dense, active, lit by the furious metabolic activity of an organism whose entire architecture had been optimized for rapid learning. The cortical structures handling pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, and social processing were all ahead of projection. The language-associated regions were active, but not impossibly so: primed, not fluent. Prepared ground, not a finished city.

And there, deeper in the architecture Enki had built beneath the operational design, something else.

Ninhursag isolated it and said nothing.

Enki leaned closer.

"That's not in my models," he said.

"Increased connectivity in the prefrontal architecture. Dendritic density nearly three times Nibiruan baseline in several regions. Plasticity factor alone—"

"I can read a scan, Ninhursag. I'm telling you that pattern should not be expressing this soon."

"The substrate is expressing more strongly than projected. You warned me the donor genome carried latent properties."

"I said it might complicate learning. I did not say it would produce this kind of density."

He pointed to the display. Ninhursag understood what troubled him. Not just intelligence. Capacity. Room. A design built to grow beyond its assigned box.

"It means he adapts," she said.

"It means he may adapt past utility." Enki pushed back from the display and ran both hands through his hair. "That is not a mining animal's neural architecture."

"No," Ninhursag said. "It is a worker's neural architecture built too near something we do not fully understand."

That was the truth she could say aloud.

The worker had finished feeding. He was looking at Enki now, following the movement of his hands with careful concentration. When Enki paced once across the narrow lab floor, the worker's eyes tracked the path and then returned to the place where Enki had stopped, as if storing the route.

Patterning.

Not identity. Not language. But not nothing.

"The mission needs workers," Ninhursag said.

"The mission needs gold."

"Yes. And the workers are how command intends to reach it."

"You sound like Enlil."

"No. Enlil would have decanted three more by now. I am still assessing the first one."

Enki turned toward her. His face carried the look she had learned to treat as warning — the expression that came just before he said something that would remain true even if no one admitted it.

"You want time," he said.

"I want data."

"You want time because the data is already making you afraid."

She did not answer.

He looked back at the cradle. The worker had shifted, bracing on one elbow. The benchmark for that should have been many hours away.

"Seven-day observation window," Enki said quietly.

"That is the protocol."

"And after seven days?"

Ninhursag looked at the displays instead of the being in the cradle. Growth curves. Musculoskeletal targets. Respiratory adaptation. Labor-suit compatibility. Every useful category in place. Not one of them sufficient.

Before she answered, the worker pulled himself another few centimeters upright, then stopped and breathed harder, as if he had found a limit and recognized it.

That, more than the movement itself, struck her. He was not simply accelerating. He was learning restraint from his own body.

"After seven days," she said, "command will ask whether the line is viable."

Neither of them said what viability meant.

Enlil was in the command center, standing over mining projections with the set-jawed focus of a man willing numbers to improve through force of attention. The overnight watch crew gave Ninhursag a wide berth when she entered. She was carrying a data pad and the look that meant she had something to say they did not want to hear.

"Enlil. I need fifteen minutes."

"Not now."

"Yes. Now."

He looked up. His eyes were bloodshot. Stim-tab residue marked the edge of his collar. He was three days into a rotation that should have belonged to two commanders. It showed not in his posture, which never failed him, but in the smaller signs around it.

Ninhursag did not soften. He did not respond to softening.

She held out the data pad. "First worker decanted at 03:17. All primary metrics above projection. Motor development at four hours is matching or exceeding our projected seventy-two-hour benchmarks. Neural architecture is... ahead."

"Ahead how?"

"Faster pattern integration. Stronger prefrontal connectivity. Better sensory organization. More rapid motor adaptation." She chose each word with surgical care. "Enough that accelerating the remaining nine carries risk if we do not understand the variance."

Enlil took the data pad, scrolled through the scans, checked the growth curves. His face flattened in the way it always did when he was calculating.

"He's functional," he said.

"He's exceptional."

"Those are not opposites."

"No," she said. "But they are not the same thing either."

Enlil set the pad down. "How do you want me to phrase this, Ninhursag? We are sixty-one days from the next communication window. When Father's next data burst arrives, he will ask whether extraction targets are stabilizing. They are not. Mining shafts are failing. Four crew dead in the flood. Morale has degraded enough that Taral used the phrase quiet mutiny in a report this morning. That is a problem I cannot solve with caution alone."

"One unstable line will not solve it either."

"One successful line begins to solve it. Ten workers help us. A hundred workers reset the timeline. If the first one exceeds projection, then the line may be viable enough to matter before Nibiru runs out of air worth breathing."

"And if the line exceeds design in the wrong direction?"

"Then you manage the variance." He met her eyes. "That is what you are here for."

"He is not just variance, Enlil."

The words landed harder than she intended. She corrected course before they hardened further.

"He is a living system expressing more complexity than forecast. That matters before we decant the remaining nine."

Enlil studied her for a beat, then said, "Show me."

They walked to the lab together.

The first worker was awake when they entered, propped in the cradle at a shallow angle. Ninhursag had removed the feed line and replaced it with a lighter support mesh. A medical instrument rested near his knee where she had left it for grip testing. He had turned it ninety degrees and was running one fingertip along its seam again and again, not randomly, but because the seam gave different resistance than the smooth side.

He looked up when the door opened.

His eyes found Ninhursag first. Recognition was too strong a word, but orientation came faster this time. Then he saw Enlil.

The worker stilled.

Not fear. Assessment. A pause in which the room acquired a new shape because a new presence had entered it.

Enlil walked to the cradle and stopped. He looked down.

The worker looked up.

"Body length thirty-seven centimeters," Enlil said. "Forty-three percent projected mass. Cardiac rhythm elevated but stable."

He was reading from the data, not from the being. Ninhursag could see the effort that took.

"Talk to him," she said.

Enlil's eyes flicked toward her. "What?"

"Talk to him. Not about the readout. To him."

His jaw set. Then, because she had made the request in front of both science and evidence, he pushed through refusal.

"Hello," he said.

The voice was flat, command register. Not hostile. Not warm.

The worker's head tilted. He studied Enlil's face, then made a brief sound in return.

The acoustic analyzer flagged directed vocalization. Turn-taking behavior. Nothing more precise than that.

But it was not random.

"He's reading your face," Ninhursag said quietly. "Pattern matching. He is trying to place you in relation to what he already knows."

"Which is almost nothing."

"Exactly."

The worker lifted one hand toward Enlil.

The gesture was slow, uncertain, and did not quite reach all the way across the cradle. An invitation only if one wanted to see it as one. A motor test only if one needed it to be that.

Enlil looked at the hand. His own hand opened once at his side, then closed again.

He did not take it.

"Thank you for the demonstration," he said to Ninhursag. The wall was back in his voice now, smooth and load-bearing. "The worker is above projection. Begin preparation of the remaining nine cradles for decanting."

"Enlil—"

"On the accelerated timeline. Forty-eight hours for the batch."

"The observation protocol calls for seven days of individual assessment before—"

"The observation protocol is a luxury we have seventy days left to afford. Accelerate the decanting. Prepare the workforce."

He turned to leave, then stopped at the threshold.

"And the neural variance," he said without turning back. "Do not put speculative interpretation into fleet-wide reports. Log the metrics. Keep the language clean."

Then he left.

Ninhursag stood beside the cradle with the worker watching her. The analyzer could not classify his expression. She was no longer sure classification failure belonged only to the machine.

She moved closer and let him take one of her fingers in his hand.

The grip was strong.

Careful, too.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly.

The words were for him, for herself, for the mission that had brought them all into this room.

Enki came back six hours later.

The first worker was on the floor of the lab on a thermal mat Ninhursag had spread near the counter. He was moving through exploratory motions that looked less like play than field testing: crawl, pause, touch, compare, repeat. He had discovered that metal and polymer made different sounds when tapped against the deck. He had discovered that the warm mat remained warm after he left it. He kept returning to it.

"It prefers the thermal surface," Enki said from the doorway.

"Yes," Ninhursag said. "Preference before obedience."

He stepped inside. The worker looked up at him with the bright, alert attention he now gave any change in the room, but Ninhursag saw the distinction too: the worker watched Enki longer than he watched objects.

"Can he stand?" Enki asked.

"Briefly. With support. Long enough to discover that balance exists. Not long enough to trust it."

The worker had found a stylus. Instead of chewing it or dropping it, he dragged its point across the floor in short repeated strokes. Not writing. Not symbols. The mark changed where pressure changed, and he seemed interested in that fact alone.

Enki crouched. "He needs more than a number."

"His provisional number is useful," Ninhursag said. "Cradle One."

"That is not a name."

"No."

He glanced up at her. "Then give him one."

For a moment she almost said the old word that had risen in her mind earlier.

She did not.

"Not yet," she said.

"Why?"

"Because the line already has one Adapa in command records, and I am not going to turn a living being into a clerical confusion for the comfort of our own mythmaking." She watched the worker draw another stroke, then press the pad of his thumb into it. "And because a name is not something I am willing to use as camouflage for uncertainty."

Enki held her gaze, then nodded once. He understood. Or enough of it.

The worker looked up at the sound of Enki's movement and made the same shaped exhale he had made in the cradle, softer now.

"He wants something," Enki said.

"Maybe attention. Maybe warmth. Maybe the stylus back after I take it away. That is the point. We are not looking at blank response any longer."

Enki watched the worker for a long moment.

"He's going to outgrow the mining schedule," he said.

"Perhaps."

"He's going to ask questions we do not want to answer."

"Not today," she said. "Today he wants heat, food, contact, and surfaces that change when he touches them. Let him have the dignity of beginning where beginnings belong."

The worker had abandoned the stylus and was now testing the edge of the mat with both hands, folding it, releasing it, waiting for it to fall flat. Cause and effect. Preference. Repetition. Not yet personhood declared in words. But room opening.

Nine more cradles waited in the next chamber.

Nine more sealed bodies. Nine more chances for success, or error, or repetition of a pattern older than any of them understood.

The mission might actually work. That was the turn Ninhursag could feel now with terrifying clarity. The extraction math that had looked impossible two weeks ago had found an answer — not in better drills or braver crews, but in beings designed for this world, able to breathe it, bear it, work inside it where Nibiruan bodies failed.

But the answer had arrived carrying its own question.

Not *What can they do?* Command already knew the shape of that question.

*What will they become if we let them continue becoming?*

Ninhursag looked at the first worker — Cradle One for the record, nameless still in the room that had made him — and watched him return, for the fourth time, to the warm mat he preferred.

Preference.

A small thing. An ordinary thing.

A dangerous first rung.

Beyond the wall, the other nine cradles waited under amber light.

She did not yet know what she would call them.

She knew, with absolute certainty, that numbers would not remain enough forever.
